Creative Pieces Submission


This project invites men of African descent to explore and share their life experiences
through creative writing. We welcome various forms of literary expression, allowing
your unique voice to shine through.


Submission Guidelines

Feel free to submit up to 3 pieces in different formats:

  • Prose
  • Short stories
  • Poems
  • Flash fiction
  • Haiku
  • Reflections

We aim to weave diverse narratives together, creating a rich tapestry of experiences that resonate with a broader audience. By sharing multiple types of literature, we can create a more impactful and interconnected anthology.

What We’re Looking For:


Your pieces should reflect your perspective, efforts, and personal experiences. We encourage authenticity and welcome candor, slang, swear words, and sensual content. We want your voice to be as unfiltered and genuine as possible.



Potential subjects include, but are not limited to:

  • Childhood
  • Life in a different country
  • Adaptation
  • Heritage
  • Masculinity
  • Mental illness
  • Prejudice and discrimination
  • Generic subjects such as love
  • Relationships
  • Sex
    Word Limits
  • Short stories and prose: 1500 to 1800 words
  • Poems: No word limit

When submitting your pieces:


● Make sure your work is clearly titled at the top of your page. With your full name.
● Include your high resolution headshot and any other illustrations
WITHIN your article doc- NOT AS AN EMAIL ATTACHMENT.
● Include a short 50 word bio or alternatively your title/occupation in your work Doc.
● Indicate the word count at the top of the page
● Do not send your article as a google file link – send as a word doc attached to your email.
● Indicate a quote or two from your work that will be used to promote your pieces in the anthology. Copy and paste quotes underneath your article title and label ‘Quote’.
● Write your name at the end of your article with your preferred contact detail (Social media or email).

Writers Photography Guidelines


● Check for watermarks on your photos.
● When looking for photos online try to use – labelled for reuse and use high resolution
photography. Anything too low will be rejected.
● Indicate photography sources for your pieces.

When complete, send your work in one email:

Email subject should be titled with:

  1. Your name
  2. Of Home and Away edition
  3. Date of submission

The Publishing Process


This section is for your information in order to appreciate the lengthy and complex process that goes into producing our magazine.

  1. Upon being selected to write for the anthology/ magazine / journal. You will
    have a deadline of up to 4 weeks to create your article.
  2. Send complete article to
    Sunbirdjournalpublishing@gmail.com
  3. At this point the front cover and other advertising vignettes are created
  4. Once edits are complete, Ashanti will send the articles to Tech (Kusmin) to be formatted and added into the magazine template
  5. Once all articles are received
    They are added to magazine>
    Paper copy is created>
    Digital copy is created>
  6. Magazine is uploaded to KDP
  7. The team orders the first paper copy to review. Any updates/ errors need to
    be flagged at this point.
  8. Magazine is updated/ re-uploaded if necessary and ready for release date
